CIO Vision Diagnostic and IT Staffing Assessment

A decade ago, as many of you recall, Jeannie Caruso and Dan Garrow commissioned MITs Sloan Institute of Management to create the very first Gaming & Hospitality IT Assessment on Governance and Investments. This became the defacto tool used when communicating upward the needs, goals and strategies of IT within the organization and in addition, armed each CIO with an arsenal of benchmarking stats and metrics. Then a couple years ago GHRC presented their Gaming & Hospitality Security Management & Governance maturity benchmark to the G&L Roundtable to enable IT leaders to better communicate the various aspects of security and support needed investments to their executive colleagues.

Now, the GHRC will be providing us even more value in their Gaming & Hospitality CIO Vision Diagnostic and IT Staffing Assessments. Again, invaluable information for each of you, perfect communicating upward tools, and most importantly specific to our niche industry of gaming and hospitality – meaning directly and specifically your world.

Each of you are invited to participate and to do so you simply need to reply email and a GHRC analyst will coordinate with you. Your participation is critical to ensure the collective body of both accurately reflects the entirety of our industry and valuable to each of you. All participants and or GHRC members will receive both of these.

The deadline to be a participant is August 1.

This year’s G&L Roundtable attendees will benefit from our executive rotation with an overview of the key highlights of both, a Q &A to answer your specific questions and most importantly tips on how to most effectively use these invaluable tools.

The Wealthiest Among Us …

According to Steve Siebold who interviewed over 1200 of the world’s wealthiest people over 3 decades he found one primary commonality: they read to self-educate. Bill Gates is a voracious reader and Warren Buffet estimates 80% of his working day is dedicating to reading.

6% of the wealthiest watch while 78% of the poor watch.

The guy in first class with the tee shirt and jeans is 10x more likely to be wealthier than all of the suits.

Warren Buffet was known to drive to get his 6-pack of soda when staying at hotels to avoid the room service charge.

From our Founder: Thoughts on TribalNet 2017

“2017 and beyond will bring exciting possibilities to the TribalNet community! While remaining true to our roots–bringing technology and tribes together, we’ll expand on that exact concept. We believe that a group together is far stronger than any individual tribe can be working alone, to that end we’ll bring opportunity and tribes together as we move forward.” ~Mike Day, TribalNet Founder and Executive Officer.

Unemployment Recap

Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 235,000 in February, and the unemployment rate dropped one-tenth down to 4.7%. Noticeable industry employment gains could be seen in Construction, 58,000; Educational Services, 29,000; and Manufacturing, 28,000.

Statewide the unemployment rate fell to a seasonally-adjusted 5.1% in December, down one-tenth from November, and the lowest it has been in nine years. The Las Vegas area dropped one-tenth down to 5.0%, Reno remained the same at 4.2%; Carson City also remained the same at 5.3%; and the Elko area rose one-tenth up to 3.9%.

Thoughts on the G&L Roundtable

With the increasing reliance on IT to improve business efficiencies, extend marketing reach, reduce labor costs and add value to customer relationships, it is absolutely essential that a forum the caliber of the G&L Roundtable exists as well as its publication. It creates an opportunity for each member to bring their own perspective and experiences to the forefront and help define best practices for the entire industry. With the rapid technological changes we’re experiencing, no one can afford to operate on an island. I’m grateful to have such a resource available.

Advertising Stats and Tips

FreeportPress released their 2016 digital vs. print study results — the summary people are reading more, reading longer and well prefer print still to digital. As would be expected ages 46 to 65 were the top readers, however, and surprisingly ages 26 to 45 were very similar with less than 5% difference.

TV still reigns as top advertising medium with magazines still in 2nd position for most effective due to tight audience targeting.

Wharton School of Business did a 2500 page analysis on the age old question, “If I spend this much on advertising, what result can I expect?” The answer in short: ‘results are inextricably linked to the message’. Two advertisers can invest the same amount and target the same audience and one will thrive while the other gets zero out of it.

Takeaway: Creating a brilliant message is time and money well spent.
